Tell us all about YOU!
I’m married to my husband, Jim, and we have two children ages 23 and 13. I live in Taylorsville, KY, a rural area where we have 13 acres. I’m an author and freelance writer. I didn’t start running until about 8 years ago. Was just looking to get in shape and speed up the midlife metabolism! I got hooked to running and can’t imagine not doing it.
How often do you get out there and run?
If I’m training for a race, I’m usually out running at least 3 days a week.
What has been your biggest obstacle as a runner?
My biggest obstacle is staying committed to a training schedule when life gets busy. Sometimes unexpected things get in the way and if I’m not careful, I’ll let too much time slip away and before I know it, I’m really off track!
What tips do you have for other runners to stay motivated.
I think something that keeps you motivated is running with others. We need the accountability and just knowing that someone is counting on you to run with them is just what you need to jump start your run, even if you don’t feel like doing it.
Something else that helps is having an upcoming race on your calendar. If you don’t, then it’s easy to slack off and not have a reason to get out and train.
Where is your favorite place to run?
My favorite place to run is a local park where I live. It’s called Beckley Creek. Part of the course goes through the woods and a small pond. The scenery is especially beautiful in the fall when all the colors are bursting like crazy.
If you could go back in time and give any advice to a younger you, what would it be?
If I could go back in time and give advice to my younger self, I would say, “Don’t wait until your early 40’s to start running! You can do this now. You have what it takes and you don’t have to be super fast. Just go at your own pace.”
Tell us about your online business, blog, or website.
My passion for running drove me to writing a book for runners. It’s an inspirational devotion book that parallels the physical aspects of running with running the real race of life. Whether people run or not, we are all in some type of race in this life! My book released in November 2016 and is available on my blog’s book page as well as Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
Part of my proceeds are donated to WaterStep, a nonprofit organization that helps put clean water in developing countries.
What exciting plans are in your immediate future? (New venture, race, life event, job, etc.)
I’m currently training for a half-marathon in the fall. I usually run a half in the spring and in the fall to keep me on track. I also run multiple 5K’s in between.
