Tell us all about YOU!
I am 45 and living in Perth, Western Australia. As a teenager, I ran for fitness and for outdoor hockey. I was a state representative player. In my twenties, I was in the Defence Force, so I ran and still played hockey. When I was thirty, I did a ski season at Whistler so overseas running was an easy thing to do. After that I moved to London and joined a gym. In early 2004, I picked up a Runner’s World magazine early and it gave me the knowledge on how to start running 10km and half marathons. Back in Australia, I finally ticked off the marathon in 2012. Now, I enjoy running for fun and exploring trails around the city and in the hills.
How often do you get out there and run?
I try and get out 3-4 times a week.
What has been your biggest obstacle as a runner?
Coming back from 2 major surgeries . In 2009 I had a bone spur off my right achillies and my 2nd toe (on the same foot) shortened. I was off running for five months and couldn’t go out walking until the four month mark. Needless to say, I was happy I could get out there. In 2014, I tore my ACL (right knee) skiing, so had to have a knee reconstruction. I had ten months off running, but this time I was able to start walking after two weeks, although the first few walks were very short and very slow!!
What tips do you have for other runners to stay motivated.
Find a race to give you something to aim towards. Or change your running route. I love exploring my neighbourhood and finding new areas I haven’t run before. Also if I haven’t been a certain way for a while mixes it up too.
How has your Charmed Running item/purchased given you inspiration?
When I look at my charms they make me smile and want to get out there. They are very true to me, I am a back of a packer (turtle) and I love my wine!! Also when a run is tough I look down and they remind why I am out there.
Where is your favorite place to run?
My neighbourhood, either around the streets or trails and getting glimpses of the sun setting over Indian Ocean. That makes me smile!!
My ultimate run though was when visiting Las Vegas. I did a running tour to Hoover Dam, running through the historical tunnels down to the dam. It was a place I always wanted to visit and being able to run to along the trail was even better.
If you could go back in time and give any advice to a younger you, what would it be?
Enjoy every run as you don’t know what’s around the corner. And if you do get injured you will get back out there. The first couple of weeks when I hurt my knee was really hard emotionally. I was in Japan seeing my husband going off skiing and all I knew was it was going to be many months until I ran again. Once I returned back to Australia it got easier, saw the surgeon and had a plan.
Tell us about your online business, blog, or website.
I have a running Facebook page called Scarborough runner. I initially started it so I wasn’t boring my Facebook friends with my running. Instead I found this whole running community. I want my page to inspire others to get out there especially newbies. I want to show that it’s never to late to start and you can do anything you set your mind too. Not every run is easy but you will have those magics runs which makes it all worth while.
I also have a Instagram and twitter but Facebook is my favourite way of communicating.
What exciting plans are in your immediate future? (New venture, race, life event, job, etc.)
I have a 15km trail race on 2 July and will run/walk it, just to go out and enjoy the simple act of running!
